Manning and Kirk voluntarily set aside 43 acres from their newest development, GreenHill Parish, for a Conservation Easement. Creation and preservation of green spaces was an integral part of the land plan, featuring over four parks in the community. WildSide Park, a 30-acre nature park with boardwalks and hiking trails, has been preserved as the centerpiece of the development. Back Yard Garden and Central Park provide places for children and adults to play and relax.
Richland County Council created the Richland County Conservation Commission in December 1998. The Commission is a response by the County to address resource protection issues in a voluntary and progressive manner. An ordinance was adopted by the Richland County Council establishing the Conservation Commission. This ordinance establishes the framework for conservation by Richland County.
The Conservation ordinance allows the Commission to work with property that exhibits one or more of the following: open space and scenic views, prime agricultural property, recreational property for hunting, fishing, water access and hiking, wildlife habitat, sensitive ecological properties, historic buildings, sites or landscapes and other properties or resources determined by County Council to be significant for natural, cultural or historic reasons.
